Roma: Shadows
of the Senate
A fully coherent simulation architecture β where Senate is verbal combat, Colosseum is political theater, and the Emperor is the final Game Master AI.
Zone I β The Thinking Room
The Domus Study
Every other zone is merely a disruption of this one. Design it as a decision engine disguised as a peaceful space.
The Domus Study is your baseline emotional state β a reference "calm state" for audio mixing, the narrative anchor for character motivation, the systems hub for politics, inventory, letters, and planning. Without it, the Senate becomes noise and the Colosseum becomes repetition.
π§ Audio Identity
The Domus audio should almost never fully change β only layer.
- βConstant warm air movement through marble corridors β subtle stereo drift
- βFountain water loop with no obvious start/end point
- βDistant city hum filtered through stone walls
- βStylus writing on wax β clicking rhythm = UI feedback system
- βScroll unrolling when menus open
- βFire crackle that increases slightly when political tension rises
No full melodies. Only 2β3 note fragments that never resolve. Prevents fatigue. Keeps it feeling like thought, not entertainment.
Letter System β Political AI Gossip Engine
Senators, gladiator sponsors, and rivals send letters. Each letter subtly changes ambient intensity, lighting warmth, and background crowd pressure.
Plan Table β Strategy Layer
A physical table map of Rome. Place pins on factions, assign agents or gladiators, schedule Senate interventions. Audio shifts per planned action type.
Companion Dialogue β Quiet But Loaded
Companions stand in the room. Conversations happen while you manage menus. They interrupt ambience, never replace it.
The Evening Wax Report
Every in-game night, a servant delivers intelligence. You review political changes. One new threat or opportunity appears. Nothing flashy β just constant pressure accumulation. This is what makes the calm space not safe, just controlled.
